Saskatoon Woman Charged With Fraud and Theft After Allegedly Misusing Power of Attorney

October 16, 2026

Saskatchewan RCMP have charged a woman with three criminal offences after an investigation found she allegedly withdrew money from another person’s bank account without permission while acting under Power of Attorney.

A woman from the Saskatoon RCMP detachment area faces multiple criminal charges following an investigation into suspected financial exploitation involving Power of Attorney authority. Police began investigating after receiving a complaint on June 17, 2025, from an individual who reported that money had disappeared from their bank account. Saskatoon RCMP worked alongside the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Central District General Investigation Section to examine the suspicious transactions and determine how the funds had been accessed.

Investigators determined that someone appointed to act as the victim’s Power of Attorney had allegedly withdrawn money without obtaining the account holder’s consent. A Power of Attorney arrangement allows an appointed individual to manage financial or legal matters on another person’s behalf. However, that authority carries responsibilities and does not permit someone to use the other person’s money for unauthorized purposes. Police allege the accused exceeded her authority by accessing funds without permission.

Following the investigation, RCMP charged the woman with theft by a person holding Power of Attorney under Section 331 of the Criminal Code, fraud over $5,000 under Section 380(1), and misappropriation of money held under direction under Section 332(1). The accused is scheduled to make her first appearance in Saskatoon court on November 18, 2026. Police have withheld her identity to protect the privacy and well-being of the alleged victim. The charges have not been proven in court.

The investigation highlights the financial risks that can arise when someone receives access to another person’s banking information and financial affairs. Saskatchewan RCMP Staff Sergeant Billy Groenen encouraged individuals and families to monitor financial accounts regularly, even when they have appointed someone they trust to manage their finances. Unexplained withdrawals, missing money, unexpected changes to banking arrangements and unpaid bills despite sufficient account balances can all indicate possible financial exploitation.

RCMP emphasize that financial abuse can affect anyone, particularly individuals who rely on others to handle banking transactions or financial decisions. Reviewing statements, questioning unfamiliar transactions and maintaining oversight of financial arrangements can help identify suspicious activity before additional losses occur. Police encourage anyone who suspects that they or a family member has experienced financial exploitation to contact their local RCMP detachment at 310-RCMP. The investigation remains before the courts, with the accused’s first appearance scheduled for November.
