Burlington Man Charged in Projector Sales Scam Targeting Waterloo Region Students

October 16, 2026

Waterloo Regional Police have arrested a 23-year-old Burlington man following an investigation into a sales scheme involving inexpensive projectors allegedly marketed as premium electronics near post-secondary campuses.

A Burlington man faces 11 criminal charges after Waterloo Regional Police investigated a series of suspicious projector sales throughout Waterloo Region. Police launched the investigation after receiving five reports between August 26 and September 18, 2026, involving individuals approaching potential buyers near post-secondary institutions. Investigators allege the sellers offered projectors at heavily discounted prices while misrepresenting the products’ quality and value.

According to police, the scheme involved inexpensive projectors that had been rebranded to resemble high-end models. Sellers allegedly presented the electronics as premium equipment available at unusually low prices, creating the impression that buyers were receiving a significant bargain. In reality, the devices were lower-cost products being marketed under misleading descriptions. The approach relied on convincing potential customers that they were purchasing valuable electronics for substantially less than their advertised worth.

Following the investigation, officers arrested a 23-year-old man from Burlington and laid 11 criminal charges. The offences include fraud over $5,000, fraud under $5,000 and uttering a forged document. Police held the accused in custody pending a bail hearing. Authorities have not disclosed the man’s identity or provided a detailed breakdown of the individual transactions. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Waterloo Regional Police are encouraging residents to exercise caution when approached by unfamiliar individuals offering discounted merchandise. Investigators recommend avoiding unsolicited transactions involving cash, electronic transfers or the disclosure of personal information. Consumers should independently verify product details and be wary of deals that appear significantly better than legitimate retail offers. Police continue to emphasize that unusually attractive prices can be a warning sign of potential fraud.
