Winnipeg Grandparent Scam Arrest Leads to Additional Sexual Assault Charges

October 9, 2026

A Winnipeg investigation into alleged grandparent scams targeting three people in their 80s has resulted in fraud and drug charges against an Edmonton man.

Winnipeg police began investigating after three older adults were allegedly targeted by callers posing as their grandchildren in August 2026. According to police, the callers claimed they had been arrested and urgently needed money for bail. Men subsequently attended the victims’ homes to collect payments, with one victim allegedly handing over cash as well as gold and silver coins. Police say the three victims collectively lost more than $37,000.

The investigation accelerated after one of the victims contacted family members, discovered the purported emergency was false and reported the incident. Officers responding to the area located a man in a vehicle who matched a suspect description and took him into custody. Police said a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered evidence they linked to all three alleged fraud victims.

Daniel Edward Warren, 29, of Edmonton was charged with fraud over $5,000, two counts of fraud under $5,000 and possession offences involving methamphetamine and fentanyl. Police said the Financial Crime Unit conducted the investigation with assistance from the Major Crimes Unit, and Warren was detained in custody. The allegations have not been proven in court.

During the fraud investigation, police said investigators learned Warren had travelled from Edmonton to Winnipeg with a teenage female and that the pair had been staying at a short-term rental. The female subsequently reported that she had been sexually assaulted while at the property and did not have the means to return to Edmonton independently. The Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit opened a separate investigation.

On August 23, investigators arrested Warren at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on a warrant for sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon and sexual interference. He remained in custody, while police said the teenage female was safely returned home. The additional allegations have also not been proven in court.
