Mexican Authorities Investigate Alleged Condo Scam That Cost Ontario Couple $280,000

July 31, 2026

Mexican authorities are investigating an alleged real estate investment scheme after an Ontario couple lost $280,000 in retirement savings on condo deals in Playa del Carmen that never materialized.

Cindy Thompson and Glenn Brown of Curve Lake, Ont., invested through Xen Investments, a Mexican company co-owned by British national Harry Robinson and Mexican national Jacqueline Herrera Herrera. Thompson initially sent $170,000 in late 2024 to purchase a one-bedroom condo in the Taak Maya development after being told she would receive the keys within several months.

The keys were never delivered. Thompson and Brown later agreed to redirect the investment into a proposed purchase and resale of seven condos after Robinson allegedly promoted the deal as offering a 100 per cent profit. Brown contributed a further $110,000 from his retirement savings, but the transaction did not proceed and the couple’s money was not returned.

The couple filed a criminal complaint through a Mexican lawyer, but said the case initially made little progress. Authorities in Quintana Roo began examining the allegations after the matter was raised with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during a June press conference.

Robinson told CBC News that the matter is before the Mexican legal system and declined further comment. Herrera could not be reached. The allegations have not been proven in court.
