Three men have been charged following a home renovation fraud investigation involving more than $500,000 in losses and victims across Canada.

Waterloo Regional Police arrested the suspects on July 8 after investigating a series of linked renovation scams targeting homeowners, particularly seniors. Police said the suspects allegedly used high-pressure and fear-based tactics to convince victims that urgent repairs were required, despite having no intention of completing the promised work.

Investigators said one of the accused also allegedly posed as a police officer while carrying out the scheme. Waterloo Regional Police have warned that renovation fraud operations of this type can be connected to organized criminal networks that move between jurisdictions and communities across Canada.

Service fraud remains a significant problem nationwide. Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre data cited in the report shows Canadians lost approximately $19.5 million to service fraud in 2025, with seniors considered particularly vulnerable to door-to-door scams involving urgent repairs, upfront payments and contractors who disappear after receiving money.
