A Niagara Falls woman has been charged after a 75-year-old Hamilton man allegedly lost $20,000 in a romance scam.

Hamilton police say the victim met Vicky Medalla in March 2025 and developed a relationship with her. Over the following months, she allegedly persuaded him to provide $20,000 to cover what she claimed were funeral expenses for her parents.

Police allege the money was obtained through deception and that the victim was assured it would be repaid.

Medalla was arrested last week and charged with fraud over $5,000. Investigators said she was already subject to two separate judicial releases for similar alleged offences in Kitchener and Hamilton, prompting police to oppose her release on bail.

The allegations have not been proven in court. Police are asking anyone with information, including possible additional victims, to contact investigators.
