A Toronto woman says she gave her entire life savings to a psychic who claimed she needed to pay to remove harmful spirits.

The woman, identified by her middle name, Nancy, said she found the psychic through an Instagram advertisement about two years ago. She was dealing with a painful hip injury and the recent deaths of her father and brother when she booked a $30 reading.

Nancy said the psychic told her that black magic threatened her health and that removing one spirit would cost $25,000. She said she was later told there were seven more spirits.

In total, Nancy says she paid $96,000. She said her health problems remained and that the loss of her savings has left her devastated.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says alleged psychic scams can use fear and emotional pressure to obtain further payments, including warnings that illness or other harm will follow if a person does not pay.

The psychic did not respond to CTV News Toronto’s requests for comment. The report did not identify any charges or police investigation connected to Nancy’s account.
