Saskatchewan RCMP is warning trucking and transportation businesses about a large-scale fraud scheme involving purchases made with fraudulent credit cards.

Police began investigating the scheme in March after at least 12 Saskatchewan businesses were targeted. Fraudsters allegedly contacted fuel distributors, automotive suppliers and tire shops by phone and attempted to purchase items such as truck tires, engine oil and trailer parts using credit cards.

RCMP said transactions initially appeared as approved and pending, leading businesses to ship the merchandise. After the goods were sent, however, the credit card payments were declined and the businesses received no payment. Related incidents have also been identified elsewhere in Western Canada.

No charges have been laid, and police believe additional businesses may have been victimized. RCMP is urging companies to verify suspicious transactions and customer identities before shipping goods, particularly when initial payment attempts fail or orders appear rushed or unusual.
