Toronto police are searching for a 29-year-old man accused of carrying out an elaborate psychic and spiritual-healing scam that allegedly cost one victim more than $800,000.

Police allege Gangadhar Babu operated under the name “Babu” and presented himself as a psychic, fortune teller and spiritual healer through a business known as Indian Psychic and Spiritual Healer. Investigators say he gained the victim’s trust by exploiting their belief in supernatural forces and convincing them that spiritual intervention was necessary.

According to police, Babu allegedly used rituals and frightening claims to persuade the victim that they or their loved ones could suffer death or serious harm unless additional money was provided for spiritual protection. Over time, police say the victim transferred more than $800,000 as part of the alleged scheme.

Babu is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for fraud over $5,000, possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000 and laundering proceeds of Canadian crime. Police believe he may have left Canada and travelled to India.

Investigators also believe there may be additional victims who were targeted using similar tactics. Toronto police are asking anyone who believes they dealt with Babu or the business, or who may have lost money through a similar psychic or spiritual-healing scheme, to contact investigators.
