Three men have been charged in connection with an alleged home renovation fraud scheme that police say targeted seniors and caused more than $500,000 in combined losses.

Waterloo Regional Police allege the suspects approached homeowners and pressured them into paying for renovation services that were not completed. Investigators have linked the incidents to similar schemes reported in communities across Canada.

In one case, a victim was allegedly approached by a man posing as a police officer. Police said the impersonation was particularly concerning because it exploited the public’s trust in law enforcement.

The three men were arrested on July 8. Police say organized groups involved in renovation fraud may travel between communities, using deceptive sales tactics, high-pressure contracts and demands for upfront payments.

The charges have not been proven in court.
