Strathcona County RCMP is warning Canadians about scams that falsely claim recipients have won Reader’s Digest prizes. Investigators say artificial intelligence is being used to make the messages and videos appear more convincing.

Victims are contacted by phone, email, text message or social media and told they have won a large cash prize or another reward. Before the prize can be released, scammers demand payment for taxes, insurance, processing fees or delivery costs.

Police say legitimate prize organizations do not require winners to pay money in advance. Some scams also include AI-generated videos that appear to show public figures personally congratulating recipients, creating a false sense of credibility.

RCMP is advising people not to send money or provide financial information in response to unexpected prize notifications. Anyone who receives such a message should independently verify the organization and avoid using contact details provided by the sender.

People who believe they have been targeted can contact Strathcona County RCMP, report the incident through the national RCMP line or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
