Toronto police have charged two Mississauga residents in connection with an online romance scam that allegedly targeted victims across Canada and the United States for large sums of money.
A police investigation into an alleged online dating scheme has resulted in fraud-related charges against a 36-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman from Mississauga.
Investigators allege that dating apps were used to approach victims in multiple jurisdictions throughout Canada and the United States. According to police, an online alias — “Hronek Radko” — along with a profile image of an unidentified man, was used to initiate contact and build relationships with potential victims.
Authorities say the individual claimed to be a successful businessperson operating in the Greater Toronto Area under the name Ocean Global Auto Ltd., also referred to as Ocean Auto. After establishing online relationships, victims were allegedly persuaded to loan large sums of money to support the purported business.
Police allege that once funds were transferred, communication ceased and the money was used for personal benefit.
A search warrant executed at a residence and vehicle in Mississauga on Jan. 21 led to the seizure of evidence and two arrests. Investigators say the Ontario Ministry of Finance assisted in the probe.
Charles Azi, 36, has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Patricia Azi, 42, is charged with possession of property over $5,000. Both are scheduled to appear in Toronto court on March 9.
Police say romance scams often intensify in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, with fraudsters exploiting trust, emotional vulnerability, and urgency. Investigators warn that rapid relationship escalation, financial requests tied to business or emergencies, and pressure to send money via wire transfer, bank draft, cryptocurrency, or business accounts are common indicators of fraud.
Authorities continue to caution the public against sending money to individuals they have not met and independently verified.
