U.S. Citizen Jailed After Using Stolen Canadian Identity in Eastern Ontario

March 6, 2026

A 70-year-old U.S. citizen has been sentenced to one year in jail after RCMP determined he lived in eastern Ontario for years under a stolen Canadian identity.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Cornwall launched an identity fraud investigation in 2024 after the man was arrested while attempting to re-enter Canada using false identification.

According to investigators, the man unlawfully assumed the identity of a living Canadian citizen in 2012. Police allege that between 2008 and 2009, while wanted in New Jersey for failing to appear in court, he illegally entered Canada and settled in South Glengarry, Ont.

RCMP say he obtained the personal information of a Canadian citizen and used it to impersonate that individual for personal gain. While operating under the stolen identity, he later created an additional false identity and secured multiple fraudulent government-issued documents, including a Canadian citizenship certificate, passport, driver’s licence, and health card.

The scheme came to light when the Canada Border Services Agency arrested him while he attempted to re-enter Canada using a false identity. He was subsequently turned over to the Cornwall RCMP and held in custody. Authorities seized all fraudulently obtained identification documents as part of the investigation.

The man was found guilty of several offences, including identity fraud, obtaining citizenship of another person, forgery-related offences involving a passport, illegal possession of government documents, and providing a false statement. In addition to the one-year custodial sentence, he received a probation order prohibiting him from entering Canada for three years.

Police say identity fraud poses significant risks to border integrity and public safety, particularly when it involves long-term misuse of government-issued credentials.
